Inclusive Credit Unions

NDI and the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions are working together to build the capacity of credit unions nationwide to better serve people with disabilities.

Based on survey data that has identified the current level of service, products and financial education available through the network of CDCUs the Federation has designed a training and technical assistance program to improve efforts to reach and market responsive services to customers with disabilities.

Core products and programs include:

Each One, Teach Many – the Federations’ signature financial literacy program
Assistive Technology PRIDE ™ - A low interest loan program for technology related special equipment.
Mortgage Lending – to expand home ownership opportunities
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance – to provide access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other beneficial tax provisions
Disability Responsive Services – to add other products and services that respond to the needs of customers with disabilities

Federation staff members team up with NDI experts to provide onsite and distance training and technical assistance that improves accessibility of physical locations and the availability of materials in alternative formats. Staff and volunteers are being trained on disability etiquette to improve sensitivity and service to meet the needs of customers with disabilities.

The next stage in the evolution of inclusive credit unions will be the development of benchmarks or standards to achieve a high level of support for individuals with disabilities and their families. The standards or benchmarks will cover a full spectrum of issues from accessibility to the range of products and services made available.
