NDI Leaders Meet with IRS Commissioner Byrd Back to news
Friday, May 13, 2011

On Friday, May 13, NDI's Executive Director Michael Morris and Director of Strategic Partnership Development and Research Johnette Hartnett welcomed IRS Commissioner Richard Byrd to the DC office to discuss continuing opportunities for partnership to advance access to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other opportunities to improve economic self sufficiency for people with disabilities.

The partnership between the IRS and NDI is now in its seventh year. For the past six years, the IRS field staff nationwide have worked closely with NDI staff to expand the work of EITC coalitions in 100 cities to provide outreach and support to low income taxpayers with disabilities. The Real Economic Impact Tour has grown to involve over 750 national, state, and local organizations creating a pathway out of poverty for individuals with disabilities and their families.

The IRS will be supporting NDI's annual Mayors Leadership Academy for the fourth year which brings together community leaders from selected cities nationwide to learn about strategies and effective practices to collaborate with disability groups who share a common vision focused on economic empowerment. Commissioner Byrd expressed his interest to continue to work with NDI to identify new partners to further expand the community outreach efforts of the IRS to meet the needs of the most underserved populations, including people with disabilities. NDI will be working to expand relationships between the IRS and the Social Security Administration.
