National Disability Institute received the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions Friend of the Federation award at the organization's national convention in Atlanta, Ga. on June 15, 2012. National Disability Institute Executive Director Michael Morris accepted the honor from Pam Owens, the Federations Interim President and CEO, who also serves as an NDI board member, during the Federations annual Annie Vamper Helping Hands Awards Luncheon.
National Disability Institute was honored for its nine-year partnership with the Federation as a pioneer in the organization's Disability Outreach Program. The BEST Interns Program, one of the latest collaborations between National Disability Institute and the Federation, helps place persons with disabilities interested in financial services careers as interns at local New Jersey credit unions. To date, 11 interns from the program have become credit union employees. Morris noted the collaboration between National Disability Institute and the Federation has yielded accessible programs and services, helping many persons with disabilities become customers and borrowers to help advance their economic independence.
