On June 14, National Disability Institute's Real Economic Impact Tour (REI Tour) made a stop in Jackson, MS to co-host an Asset Development Summit for Persons with Disabilities with United Way of the Capital Area. REI Tour Regional Specialist Katie Metz attended the event and was one of the opening presenters. Additional welcoming comments were made by Carol Burger, President & CEO of United Way of the Capital Area, Nanette Battle, Senior Tax Consultant from the IRS and Ira Murray, Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of the Capital Area.
Nearly 25 area agencies were represented at the Summit including:
- MS Department of Rehabilitation Services
- LIFE of Mississippi
- Institute for Disability Studies at the University of Southern MS
- Internal Revenue Service
- Foundation for Mid-South
- Coalition for Prosperous Mississippi
The Summit offered attendees the chance to discuss ideas on improving asset development in order to foster economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. Attendees were given the opportunity to hear from experts in both the disability and asset development communities in Jackson. In addition to the presentations, attendees provided insight on creating an action plan for Jackson, MS by breaking out into smaller work group discussions. These smaller discussions focused on how the asset development and the disability communities can work together to build a better economic future for persons with disabilities.
