NDI Celebrates Veterans Day

In recognition of Veterans Day, National Disability Institute (NDI) joined tens of millions of Americans, businesses and agencies representing every level of government to reflect on and honor the service of our nation's veterans.

Currently, more than half of all returning veterans from conflict areas have a service-related disability and with it, an all too uncertain economic future. That is why NDI, the nation's first nonprofit dedicated exclusively to improving the financial capability of all people with disabilities, is working tirelessly to ensure the 3.6 million veterans with disabilities have the same economic opportunities as veterans and other individuals without disabilities.

In that spirit, NDI calls on the entire REI Network and people from across the country to work together to create inclusive communities that support the unique needs of all people.

Program Spotlight

MyFreeTaxes Veterans Initiative

MyFreeTaxesVeterans Day, originally commemorated as Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I, was proclaimed by President Wilson November 1919. He is famously quoted as saying, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..."

During the month of November, as our country reflects on the service and sacrifices of veterans and their families, the MyFreeTaxes team challenges affiliate partners to utilize the opportunity to intensify outreach efforts to veterans and their families.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reports that more than 23 million veterans in the U.S. and more than 37 million veterans, dependents and/or survivors are eligible for veterans benefits. Additionally, there are numerous statistics underscoring the need for financial capability strategies, such as free tax preparation, to be introduced and embedded within the veteran community. Furthermore, the 2010 Census reports the median income of veterans was $35,367, well below the eligibility threshold for MyFreeTaxes. These figures highlight the fact that MyFreeTaxes’ services are critically needed and should help partners lay the groundwork to begin a conversation with local organizations serving veterans on how MyFreeTaxes can be a financial capability strategy to help build economic empowerment for veterans and their families while also preventing, or even extricating, veterans from homelessness.

MyFreeTaxes is dedicated to ensuring our nation’s veterans and their families have achievable access to free tax preparation services. National Disability Institute has also identified regions throughout the country with intensified efforts and partnerships with the VA to serve veterans and their families. If you would like more information on how to reach out to veterans in your local community please free to utilize our Affiliate Portal page on military and veterans and/or contact Katie Metz at kmetz@ndi-inc.org.
