National Disability Institute’s New Board Poised to Advance Organization’s Commitment to Bolstering the Financial Health of People with Disabilities

Washington, D.C. (February 5, 2015) – National Disability Institute (NDI), the nation’s first and leading nonprofit organization dedicated to building a better economic future for people with disabilities, announced today John Nelson, Managing Partner of the Wall Street Without Walls initiative, was elected President of the Board of Directors, and Alexandra McArthur, with the Taproot Foundation, was selected as Vice President.

“I am honored to have been selected by my peers to lead NDI’s venerable Board of Directors,” Nelson said. "The very able staff leadership at NDI, its wide network of partnerships and Board support have helped create a dynamic, visionary organization committed to help advance the income security of people with disabilities. Helping to economically empower this broad community of citizens is NDI's charge, one the Board has supported and will continue to with positive energy and national leadership.I am humbled by the responsibility entrusted in me to serve as NDI’s next president of the Board.”

Nelson is the managing partner of Wall Street Without Walls (WSWW), an initiative which connects capital market institutions and financial products with organizations engaged in economic development in low- and moderate-income communities. Funded by major foundations, WSWW provides capital markets orientation and training programs nationally through teams of volunteer finance professionals, including retired and active investment bankers. Nelson previously served as director of the Corporate Partnership Program at the National Congress for Community Development.

“I am thrilled to serve on NDI’s Board in my new capacity as vice president, and work with some of the most creative and committed individuals to improve the lives of people with disabilities,” McArthur stated. “NDI is respected not only as a policy thought-leader, but also as a field innovator. This combination of advocacy and pragmatic programming is unique and necessary to increase economic opportunity for people with disabilities.”

At the Taproot Foundation, McArthur is a senior associate consultant on the Advisory Services Team, responsible for helping corporations develop and implement pro-bono programs for communities in need. This past October, McArthur was named by President Obama as a White House Champion of Change for Disability and Employment. She is also a former Ms. Wheelchair America. Additionally, McArthur served as co-chair on the Junior Board for Resources for Children with Special Needs. McArthur has been an NDI Board member since February 2012.

“As NDI celebrates its 10th anniversary, we are gratified to see how much progress we’ve made, but also acknowledge how much farther we still have to go to ensure all people with disabilities are part of the economic mainstream,” Michael Morris, NDI Executive Director, said. “Having distinguished Board members like John and Alexandra, with their valuable expertise and experience as financial and disability leaders, will help NDI move forward in our mission for the economic advancement of all people with disabilities.”

Over the coming months, the Board will focus its efforts on implementation of the ABLE Act, with critical outreach and education activities to individuals with disabilities and their families; support for the launch of the American Dream Employment Network (ADEN) to provide critically needed new assistance to jobseekers with disabilities who are Social Security beneficiaries; and identification of additional public-private sector partnerships to pioneer additional pathways to a better economic future.

NDI, and its work, are overseen by a 17-member Board responsible for making policy decisions, rulemaking and overseeing the organization’s operations.
